The problem with a 9 conference game schedule is it limits a team's
flexibility on how it does its OOC schedule. Remember most power conference schools believe they need to play a minimum of 7 home games every year for financial reasons. For years when a team plays 5 away conference games, that means they can't play an away OOC game too and still be able to play 7 home games unless they are willing to play a 13th game @Hawai'i. If a team is negotiating a future home-home series with another school that also plays 9 conference games, then that could really limit which years the games are played in. Likewise, it could even lead to scheduling more home games against G5 or DI-FCS opponents because they have more flexibility on when they can play away games.
That's why an even number of conference games is always better than an odd number of conference games.
